FOURTEEN

In the morning over breakfast, Sam shared the video with Lacey, Gabe and Roxanne. While they all knew the bare bones of the events, the sights and sounds captured on the video fleshed out the full experience.

Almost as soon as it started, Lacey got out her notebook and pen and set it beside her plate. Sam knew she’d capture all the information that had spilled out of the enraged ghost.

“My God,” Roxanne said as they listened to the frantic flight at the end of the video. “Is he going to be okay?”

Sam clicked off the video. “We don’t know yet. We’ll see when we go out to Grampa’s.”

“And what about the information here?” Gabe asked, motioning toward Sam’s phone. “Will that help break the case?”

Lacey scanned her notes. “It could,” she said. “Having names certainly helps, and the equipment he describes is very specific. This is a major drug organization.”

“I don’t understand,” Roxanne said. “Vacuum equipment? Sub-zero refrigerators? What’s that all about?”

“The best way to get drugs past drug-sniffing dogs,” Lacey said.

Gabe frowned. “I thought they packed the stuff in coffee or garlic or something else that would mask the odor.”

Lacey shook her head. “Doesn’t work,” she said. “Dogs don’t smell like we do. If we smell a strong odor like coffee, that’s all we smell, but a dog smells everything. Their sensitive noses can pick up the tiniest molecules of drugs within the coffee. It’s practically impossible to get drugs past a dog, but one of the best ways is to vacuum-seal the drugs so no molecules can escape, then freeze it. Some even pack it in lead cases as well. But if just one molecule escapes, the dog can smell it.”

“Wow,” Roxanne said. “I had no idea.”

“So what this tells me,” Lacey said, tapping her notebook, “is that this is a highly successful—read profitable—organization if they can afford this kind of equipment. It’s no wonder they kill with impunity. There are millions of dollars at stake, and they’ll do anything to protect that money stream.”

“Including killing his own brother?” Roxanne asked. “That’s horrible.”

Lacey nodded. “The power’s the thing. Whoever the kingpin is, he’s not trusting anyone, and he’ll kill anyone who he even thinks is planning to move up the ranks. A drug gang like this has the same hierarchy as any big company; the top one percent makes all the money and the rest get the crumbs. Money and power are very strong lures for some people, and the ones who have it will do anything to keep it.”

“So what will you do with this?” Gabe asked, nodding toward Lacey’s notebook.

“We’ve got to get it to Tewanima,” Sam said. “She’s the lead in the investigation.”

“This is Sunday, you know,” Gabe said. “She may not be on duty.”

Sam shrugged. “I’m sure we can get a message to her. John will have her number—if he’s recovered. If not, we’ll go down to the Hopi station.” He glanced over at Lacey. “Might as well get out to Grampa’s and see what’s going on.
